May 11 — Arrive at Hale Koa, Oahu

May 11 2017 Hawaii Room FlowersWell, the flights went well.  One was even in early, so we all our connecting flights in spite of not much time to get from gate to gate.  But it felt like we were on planes for days.  I was too excited for 15 hours and 44 minutes of airflight.  I wanted to be here.

And here I am.

Hale Koa is spectacular.  This is some resort complex.  It’s open air, lushly landscaped, and beautifully furnished.  The military did itself proud with this place.  Hale Koa means house of the warrior and like much of the military experience, it’s big, impressive and commanding.  I am well pleased.

May 11 2017 Hawaii Florist CardI did order flowers for my mother to be in the room when we arrived.  They’re pretty spectacular too.  All in all, spectacular is the word of the day!

Aloha Y’all

momandmeI am so freaking excited!

Tomorrow at about 1 p.m., my mother and I are getting on a plane.  The final destination is Honolulu where will we spend a week before heading to Maui for another week.

It’s my Mother’s Day gift to the two of us.

No.  I can’t afford it.  But after my dad died so suddenly last year, I realized I was running out of time to do all the things with my parents that I wanted to do.  I raided the retirement account.  Chef Boy ‘R Mine is going to have to support me in my old age.

momandme3We were stationed on Oahu from 1967 to 1970 when my dad was in the Marine Corps.  I have always wanted to go back and see the house I lived in and visit some of the old haunts.  So has my mother.  I got the bright idea shortly after my dad’s funeral that we should do this.

I’ve been planning this trip for well over a year.

I’m not good at planning.  Putting this trip together has taxed my skills.  I finally had to get a binder to help me organize things.  The notebook has been a lifesaver!  I have everything in it.  Airline itineraries, tour tickets and receipts, restaurant and hotel reservation confirmations, and a personalized itinerary for each day of the trip have filled a 2” binder.

momandme2I hope I have the right balance of things to do and downtime.  We’re doing quite a bit – snorkeling, hiking, swimming under waterfalls, Haleakala at sunrise, dinner cruise, helicopter ride, road to Hana, spa day, luscious dining, koi ponds, botanical gardens, and the Polynesian Cultural Center which is similar to an Epcot experience.

On Oahu, we’re staying in a military resort, Hale Koa which translates to “house of the warrior”.  It’s a four star resort for active duty and retired military personnel right on Waikiki at a discounted rate.  We were fortunate to get a reservation for the time I wanted – Mother’s Day.  We will also visit the base we lived on and I should get to see my old school and house.

On Maui, we’re staying at Kahana Villa Resort which is a part of mydoug and me grass hut mother’s timeshare plan.  Again, we were fortunate to get the week we wanted. Neither of us has ever been to Maui, so it’s all going to be new.  One of the things we’re doing while there is eating at the Lahaina Grill which has been named by several entities as one of the top hundred restaurants in the United States.  I about passed out at the prices, but I do so love a good fine dining experience.

Have I mentioned I’m excited?  I’m like a little kid waiting for Santa Claus.  There is so much I need to be doing right now – cleaning this house so my house-sitter doesn’t pass out from the sheer filth, finishing packing, etc. etc.  I am too excited to focus on any one task for long.  Truly, I’m fairly vibrating with anticipation.

The trip there will be brutal and we’re likely to miss a connection or two.  I thoughtfully reserved airline flights that allowed two hours at each layover, but the airline changed my reservations.  (With no consultation or anything, mind you!)  I now have 47 minutes in Philadelphia to change planes and 51 minutes at LAX.   I’m pretty much resigned to the idea that we will not arrive in Honolulu tomorrow at 11:00 p.m. as planned, but will get in some time on Friday.  Alas…  It’s all good though. I scheduled Friday as a buffer day, so we don’t have a tour or anything important scheduled.  But one day less in paradise will still be a shame.

Aloha y’all!

Happy Valentine’s Day

When Chef Boy ‘R Mine was a wee lad, Valentine’s Day was a high holiday.  We had to make a big deal out of the day or the kid would have just died.  Below is a card he made for me in school before he could even write his name.  I have cherished it all these years and present it here for your admiration.

jerremy-valentine

He was such a cute kid!  I especially love the inside of the card.  The heart person complete with heart ajeremyvalentine-2rms and legs just crack me up.  I think it was supposed to be his signature.

This year, I am my own Valentine.  I generally love being single, but there are days, today one of them, when I wouldn’t mind someone to send me flowers or give me a card or let me know that they love me.  Still and all, I’m happy.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you!

I’m a dish-aholic

I’ve touched on the fact that I’m inordinately fond of dishes and glassware, but I’ve never actually admitted to this addiction on the blog.

I Love Cobalt BlueI love dishes. It’s almost a sickness.  My kitchen cupboards are jam packed and the china cabinet doesn’t have room for much else – though I’m holding out for more moriage dragonware plates.  Besides dishes, I have a fair amount of tea pots and tea cups – one set a gift from a friend who died a few years back.

I have multiple sets of dishes and pretty much use them all as circumstances dictate. A good many of them are cobalt blue and I’m completely in love with my blue and white “everyday” dishes.  While dishes, in general, please me, cobalt blue ANYTHING makes my heart sing.

Doug Birthday DishesBut I’m not exclusive to blue. There’s the delicately colored bird set with square plates I bought to celebrate Mother’s Day as my mother is as fond of birds as I am of dishes. [Square plates just rock my world.] And we can’t forget the brightly colored Mexican style dishes I bought to celebrate HMO’Keefe’s 60th birthday – bright red, orange, yellow and green.

With Doug’s death, I inherited some stunning Mexican talavera. Included are two lobster plates that I gave him one year for his birthday.  Doug was as fond of talavera and lobster as I am of shoes.

Of course, there’s the “good china” and matching stemware that was a gift from my father. I’ve told that story already.

I have a 4-piece place setting of some beautiful Lennox Christmas china that I use for Chef Boy ‘R Mine’s private Christmas dinner. For years, I wanted enough Christmas dishes to feed a large horde should one ever show up for the holidays.

The Ruby Red Christmas DishesA few years ago, I found some beautiful antique ruby red, cut glass dishes at Target. They were stunning and stunningly affordable.  Over three years, I bought 24 plates, 24 bowls and 4 goblets.  The goblets always sold out before I could get in to buy them.  It’s nagged at me for eons that I can’t provide beverages in matching glasses for the 24-person-horde that has yet to show up.

Yesterday, I went on an online shopping binge. In addition to buying more Christmas village pieces (that I certainly don’t need – but what’s need got to do with it), I found 20 goblets from various sellers to complete the Christmas dishes.  I am STOKED.  I am so excited about it that I’m resolved to invite 24 people over to the house this holiday season!
